There’s something incredibly special about photographing a family year after year — watching them grow, change, and evolve together. As a Nashville portrait photographer, some of my favorite sessions are the ones where I get to reconnect with families I’ve known for years.
This recent fall family session in Nashville was one of those moments that filled my heart. The park was bursting with rich autumn color — golden leaves, soft light, and that unmistakable Nashville glow that only happens this time of year. But even more than the scenery, it was the connection between this family that made every image so meaningful.
I first met this couple over six years ago when I photographed their engagement session. Since then, I’ve had the honor of documenting their wedding, newborn photos, and countless family milestones in between. Watching their love story unfold through every stage of life has been such a joy — and this session was another beautiful chapter.
This time, it wasn’t just their little family in front of the camera. It was an extended family session, complete with grandparents, aunts, and uncles — generations gathered together to celebrate the love that started it all. These sessions are such a gift: the laughter, the hugs, the subtle similarities that run through each face and expression. Every moment felt like a celebration of legacy and connection.
The mom shared words with me after our session that completely capture why I believe regular family portraits are so important:
“Our family photos are my favorite gift. As the kids grow, I love seeing how they are more similar to us. Harper has her dad’s eyes, filled with curiosity, bravery and a happiness that meets everyone. Her sass is there too but, it is a good balance. Reese enters a space with caution while keeping his space until he is ready to unleash his true self, much like me. His chin is also a copy and paste of my dad’s. Each time we get photos done, no matter how much time in between, it’s like meeting them all over again. They change so quickly in every way and I feel so grateful that I get to look back on each stage with a range of photos that truly captures them. Harper is wild and free, dancing to her own music. Reese is silly and his heart is so big. They are the perfect sibling duo.”
Her words say it all. Family photography isn’t just about creating pretty pictures — it’s about preserving the moments that show who your children are right now. Their quirks, their laughter, their connections. These are the memories that become priceless over time.
Whether it’s your immediate family or a gathering of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, every family deserves to be documented as they are right now.
If it’s been a while since your last session, fall is the perfect season to schedule new portraits. The colors are gorgeous, the weather is cozy, and it’s such a wonderful time to slow down and celebrate your family as you are today.
As a Nashville family photographer, my goal is to create images that feel true to you — full of warmth, love, and connection. Each family’s story is different, and that’s exactly what makes every session so meaningful.
